High Esteem of Women in Islam

Women have a very important place in Islamic Society. Unlike a number of other religions, Islam holds a woman in high esteem. Her importance as a mother and a wife has been clearly stated by the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Paradise lies at the feet of your mothers.” Once a person asked the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, “Who deserves the best care from me?” Our Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam replied, “Your mother.” This, He repeated three times, “Then your father and your nearest relative.”
In His farewell speech at Arafah in the tenth year of Hijrah, the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said, ” O people, your wives have certain rights over you and you have certain rights over them. Treat them well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers.” The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam also said, ” The best among you is the one who is best towards his wife.”

O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness, that you may take away part of the dowry you have given them – except when they have become guilty of open lewdness. On the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If you take a dislike to them, it may be that you dislike something and God will bring about through it a great deal of good. (4:19)

These sayings clearly prove the important position given to women in Islam. But there are still people, who have misgivings about the status of women in Islam. To these people, the Muslim woman is seen almost as a prisoner, and as someone who has no right and is always living under the domination of man. These notions are totally wrong, and are based on ignorance rather than knowledge of Islam.
One of the rites of Haj is a fast walk between Safa and Marwah, which is observed to remember the event of Hazrat Hajra, the mother of Hazrat Ismail Alayhis Salam, who ran between these two hills to find water. This is another proof of the importance given to women in Islam.

May Almighty Allah give us all the right understanding, AMEEN.

  1. asalamualikum sis and bro`s
no doubt islam gives a very high and prominent status to a women no matter in which relation but the two most important or better said most highly respected status or relation of a women is as a mother or wive.
there are some people i knw personally who say that islam says a women is the under part of a man i mean the part under abdominem dat is wrong and incorrect.
man beat there wives up that is totally forbidden in islam but there are some conditions where its allowed, womens arer proud that they bear the way there husbands beat them.only to conclude is dat men women both have equal rites and men have to take caer of the women and vice versa

  2. ASSALAMU ALAIKUM VARAHAMUTHULLAHAI VABARAKATHU. I UNDERSTAND ISLAM GIVES RESPECT AND DIGNITY TOWARDS WOMEN BUT UNFORTUNATELY MUSLIM MEN’S NOT GIVING RESPECT TO THEIR WOMEN(MOTHER,SISTER,WIFE,DAUGHTER AND DAUGHTER IN LAW) THEY ARE TREATED LIKE SLAVES NOT GIVING THE FORMAL EDUCATION ALSO IN THIS REGARD I WANT TO TELL YOU SOME THING THAT WHY CAN YOU TAKE CLASSES THAT PARTICULARY ABOUT WOMEN IN ISLAM SHOULD BE TREATED GOOD WAY. AND I HAVE SAW MANY MUSLIM FAMILIES INCLUDING MY FAMILY MY FATHER MARRIED ANOTHER WOMAN AND HE FORSAKEN MY FAMILY WE THREE CHILDREN WERE BROUGHT UP MY MOTHER ALONE. SEE WITHOUT ANY SUPPORT OF MAN MY MOTHER BROUGHT US. (IT IS THE GREAT MERCY OF ALLAH) NOW MY CONCLUTION IS TO GIVE BETTER EDUCATION TO MUSLIM WOMEN AND JOB OPPERTUNITY IS ONLY WAY TO GET FREEDOM. VASSALAM,SAMINA

  3. Allahuakbar!!!!

  4. Of course Islam gives women rights. In Islam both Men and Women are EQUAL!!! Most non Muslims are ignorant. They think that the hijab is a cage. Here is a poem that i found on the internet that explains the Hijab and its importance in Islam. It explains how women i Islam are FREE.
I did not write it, the author was anonymous. Its called BABY ITS ALL GOOD:

What do you see when you look at me
Do you see someone limited, or someone free
All some people can do is just look and stare
Simply because they can’t see my hair
Others think I am controlled and uneducated
They think that I am limited and un-liberated
They are so thankful that they are not me
Because they would like to remain ‘free’
Well free isn’t exactly the word I would’ve used
Describing women who are cheated on and abused
They think that I do not have opinions or voice
They think that being hooded isn’t my choice
They think that the hood makes me look caged
That my husband or dad are totally outraged
All they can do is look at me in fear
And in my eye there is a tear
Not because I have been stared at or made fun of
But because people are ignoring the One up above
On the day of judgment they will be the fools
Because they were too ashamed to play by their own rules
Maybe the guys won’t think I am a cutie
But at least I am filled with more inner beauty
See I have declined from being a guy’s toy
Because I won’t let myself be controlled by a boy
Real men are able to appreciate my mind
And aren’t busy looking at my behind
Hooded girls are the ones really helping the Muslim cause
The role that we play definitely deserves applause
I will be recognized because I am smart and bright
And because some people are inspired by my sight
The smart ones are attracted by my tranquility
In the back of their mind they wish they were me
We have the strength to do what we think is right
Even if it means putting up a lifelong fight
You see we are not controlled by a mini skirt and tight shirt
We are given only respect, and never treated like dirt
So you see, we are the ones that are free and liberated
We are not the ones that are sexually terrorized and violated
We are the ones that are free and pure
We’re free of STD’s that have no cure
So when people ask you how you feel about the hood
Just sum it up by saying, ‘Baby its all good’
